Chemical Analysis of Metals

Pipette filling sample beakers for ICP analysis

Metal Chemical Analysis & Composition

IMR provides qualitative and quantitative analysis to ensure your metallic materials are fit for their intended use. From simple steels to complex nickel and titanium alloys, we deliver clear reports comparing your results directly to UNS or customer specifications.

Sample Preparation & Trace Detection

Our labs utilize both classical wet chemistry and modern microwave preparation to detect trace elements at parts-per-billion (ppb) concentrations. Whether you require semi-quantitative screening or high-precision quantitative analysis, our prep labs ensure sample integrity and fast results.

Analytical Method Comparison

Use the table below to select the method that best fits your sample size and precision requirements.

Method Best for… Sensitivity / Detection Sample Requirements Average Turnaround
ICP-MS Extreme Precision Highest: Parts-per-billion (ppb) Liquid or Solid 3–5 Days
ICP-AES Trace Analysis High: ~50 ppm (trace levels) Requires acid digestion 3–5 Days
OES Efficiency & Cost Trace levels; "Clean burn" Ideal: 1" x 1" flat surface ≤ 3 Days
XRF Non-Destructive Compositional analysis Ideal: 29mm diameter ≤ 3 Days
SEM-EDS Tiny Samples Consistency checks/Failure analysis Debris, shavings, or small bits Variable

Specialized Metal Testing

  • Combustion Methods: Precise identification of Carbon, Sulfur, Hydrogen, Oxygen, and Nitrogen.
  • PMI (Positive Material Identification): Available in our accredited labs or via on-site testing at your location.
  • Failure Analysis (SEM-EDS): Ideal when only debris or shavings are available; determines if material is consistent with desired specs.

Technical Selection Guide

  • Need the lowest detection limits? Choose ICP-MS.
  • Have a large sample and need it fast? OES or XRF are the most cost-effective and least destructive.
  • Working with a microscopic sample? SEM-EDS is the preferred method for debris and small fragments.
