IMR Materials Testing Technical Blog
Today, we feature another amazing woman in science from one of our Asia labs. Ms. Weiwei Liu is the Senior Metallurgical Engineer in our Suzhou, China facility. She joined IMR in 2016, after earning Bachelor and Master’s Degrees in Science and Engineering from Northwestern Polytechnical University in Shaanxi, China.
When Liu was young, she realized that “science and technology is the first productive force” from her extensive book reading. That understanding sparked her dream of becoming a scientist, leading her to pursue specialized education and ultimately, a career in science.
She observes three simple, but challenging, steps to stay on the right path:
- Study hard, because you’re never too old to learn.
- Be bold, but be careful.
- Don’t be afraid of getting dirty or being tired.
Liu currently engages in metallography work, such as grain size evaluation, microstructure evaluation, hardness testing, and more. Metallography requires much scientific knowledge, as well as advanced techniques in sample preparation to help uncover material microstructure details. Her additional training in GE-Aviation grain size E50TF133 testing and evaluation has become invaluable for suppliers who test their materials at IMR-Suzhou.
For girls or young women interested in pursuing a career in science, Liu advises that “confidence, hard work, and persistence will provide a wider career path”. The world is facing many challenges, and we need the creative minds, collaborative attitude, and incredible determination women possess to solve them.
